The Broadway musical "Tammy Faye," based on the life of the televangelist Tammy Faye Messner, is closing less than a week after its opening, having received lackluster reviews and poor box office performance.
Despite its successful premiere in London in 2022 and accolades like four Olivier Awards, New York audiences did not respond positively, with the show only grossing less than $400,000.
Jake Shears, who composed the musical's lyrics, called the experience of bringing "Tammy Faye" to Broadway thrilling, expressing gratitude to the talented cast.
Shears described musical theatre as an "archaic form of art" that has remained unchanged for 800 years, emphasizing the complexity and dedication involved in the process.
