"This is incredible to get so close to them, how large they are," Ed Lamm reported after observing the elephant seals at Drake's Beach. The sheer size of these creatures, some bulls weighing up to 5,000 pounds, astounds visitors. It's an extraordinary experience witnessing their impressive physicality and unique behaviors during their winter breeding season, which draws people from far and wide to marvel at the natural phenomenon in Marin County.
Ranger Earl Perez-Foust mentioned, "We started seeing some large bulls in December, females and pregnant moms are coming back. Right now, we estimate around 30, with more on the way." This highlights the seasonal nature of the elephant seals' return, showcasing the breeding patterns and the anticipation of new arrivals.
Catherine Lucas from Inverness expressed her excitement about the seals, saying, "They're so extraordinary, comical and we were having a discussion in the car if they were ugly or not. I gather there are a couple of cows that have come in and will be giving birth any moment." Her comment humorously addresses the perception of these marine mammals and adds to the charm of the viewing experience.
Ranger Fiona O'Kelly remarked on the improvements in safety, stating, "Previous years when the fencing wasn't so robust, they smashed it but now we have this new fence line." This emphasizes the efforts taken by the park to ensure both the safety of the seals and the visitors while allowing people to enjoy observing this magnificent migration.
