In response to escalating violence in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), leaders of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) convened in Zimbabwe to address the issue. Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution, noting the suffering of locals due to ongoing conflicts. Tensions are high, particularly between South Africa and Rwanda, following the killing of SADC troops by M23 fighters. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa's demand for a ceasefire was met with hostility from Rwandan President Paul Kagame, who accused Ramaphosa of not being a credible mediator.
Escalating hostilities in eastern Congo have created a dire situation. We meet here to seek a lasting solution to end the challenges facing the DRC people.
The conflict in the mineral-rich area had started to weigh heavily on diplomatic relations. Most governments believe that M23 is propped up by Rwanda.
Ramaphosa demanded a ceasefire from Kagame's government, with Kagame threatening retaliation, accusing Ramaphosa of lying and distorting the facts on the ground.
If South Africa prefers confrontation, Rwanda will defend itself and respond accordingly.
