The leaders of SADC convened to address the worsening situation in eastern DRC following the East African Community's recent discussions. Zimbabwe’s President Mnangagwa emphasized the need for a collective resolution to ongoing violence impacting civilians and regional stability. Tensions are rising between South Africa and Rwanda after the death of SADC troops, with accusations of Rwandan support for the M23 movement. South African President Ramaphosa's demands for a ceasefire have angered Rwandan President Kagame, indicating a potential diplomatic crisis amidst urgent calls for peace efforts in the region.
Escalating hostilities in eastern Congo have created a dire situation. We meet here to seek a lasting solution to end the challenges facing the DRC people.
Most governments throughout the region believe that M23 is propped up by the Rwandan government, a charge which Kigali denies.
South Africa is in no position to take on the role of a peacemaker or mediator.
People in eastern Congo have suffered for far too long. While we pause to mourn our loss, our resolve to ensure collective security cannot be shaken.
