DR Congo summit directs army chiefs to enforce ceasefire
Briefly

The M23, backed by Rwanda, is making aggressive advances in the eastern DRC, resulting in significant casualties and displacements. A recent summit of African leaders in Tanzania sought to address the crisis, directing military chiefs to devise an immediate ceasefire plan. This meeting also stressed the need for humanitarian corridors to assist victims. President William Ruto of Kenya highlighted the necessity for the M23 to halt its progress and called for an end to retaliatory military actions by the Congolese army. The situation raises regional security concerns as various countries provide military support to the DRC.
The Rwanda-backed M23 armed group has rapidly seized swaths of territory in the mineral-rich eastern DRC in an offensive that has left thousands dead and displaced vast numbers.
The summit called for an opening of humanitarian corridors to evacuate the dead and injured, and for army chiefs to meet within five days to plan a ceasefire.
We call on all parties to actualise the ceasefire, and specifically on the M23 to halt further advancement, said Kenya President William Ruto.
Since the M23 re-emerged in 2021, peace talks hosted by both Angola and Kenya have failed, and multiple ceasefires have collapsed.
