On Saturday, soldiers from South Africa, Malawi, and Uruguay lost their lives while combating M23 rebel fighters in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The South African National Defense Force reported that nine of its soldiers were killed while defending the key city of Goma from a full-scale attack by M23. Malawi's military confirmed the death of three of its soldiers as part of the SADC Mission, while Uruguay announced one fatality among its UN peacekeepers. The M23 hostile forces had launched a full-scale attack on our troops with the intention of taking over Goma but were unable to advance due to the heroic resistance put up by our gallant fighters.
We confirm the loss of three of our courageous soldiers who were part of the SADC Mission in the DRC, who fell in the line of duty during an encounter with the M23 rebel group.
