DR Congo: M23 rebels on the trail of mineral resources DW 11/08/2024
Briefly

The March 23 Movement (M23) has dramatically extended its control in North Kivu, seeking to exploit the region's rich mineral resources like gold and coltan.
Augustin Muhesi emphasizes, 'The Walikale area is very rich in minerals. If the M23 wants to occupy this area at all costs, it is only to create an opportunity to mine minerals so that it can finance its military operations.'
According to the United Nations, M23's territorial gain is unprecedented, covering five out of six areas of North Kivu, marking a 70% increase since November 2023.
Despite a cease-fire mediated in August, M23 resumed its offensive, clearly demonstrating their ambition to gain control over lucrative mining territories in the region.
