Dozens of swans found dead or 'gasping' for air in Grand Union Canal
Briefly

The government's Animal and Plant Health Agency opened an investigation into the unusual deaths of swans and other birds at the Grand Union Canal, initially suspecting avian influenza but later ruling it out.
Following further tests, botulism was found in the water, leading to significant concerns as outbreaks can result in hundreds of bird deaths. Symptoms include lethargy and inability to move and eat.
Swan Support noted that while botulism is typically characterized by specific symptoms, the affected swans are displaying unusual lethargy and weakness, which complicates rescue efforts.
There is no effective treatment for avian botulism, and by the time rescue organizations can respond, many birds are usually too far gone to save.
