Amanda Guest, the founder of BFF.fm, announced her resignation as director to address financial challenges, stating, "Looking ahead, the quickest way to get the station on a more solid footing was to remove my salary and related HR costs from the budget." This response highlights her commitment to preserving the nonprofit station in the face of financial difficulties by returning to a volunteer-driven operational model.
Guest indicated that the station has not met its 2024 fundraising goals and mentioned that inflation has negated a recent uptick in individual charitable donations, which has made sustaining the station increasingly difficult. In her blog post, she shared her concerns, stating, “The financial landscape has become too challenging to navigate efficiently.”
Reflecting on BFF.fm's importance to the community, Guest commented on how the station has established itself as a cornerstone of San Francisco’s online radio scene since its inception in 2013, emphasizing, "We're not just a radio station; we're a platform for a diverse range of voices and ideas that often don't get represented in traditional media."
As BFF.fm transitions back to being volunteer-run, Guest expressed her optimism in the volunteers’ capacity, stating, "I expect the volunteers to at least maintain, operationally, the status quo." This reflects her belief in the community's ability to sustain the station's operations despite her departure.
