Detroit residents are demanding action from Lafayette Coney Island after a recent rat infestation forced the restaurant to close on January 24. The Detroit Health Department stated that the restaurant must undergo extensive cleaning and address structural problems. Community members highlighted the need for healthier food options and safety in local dining establishments. Malik Shabazz, who organized a demonstration, emphasized the importance of food quality and urged for the adoption of the Dining with Confidence ordinance, aimed at improving transparency in restaurant health inspections.
"Serve people with the love, the respect, the kindness and the good food that you want your mother, your father, your children to eat," said Malik Shabazz, who organized the demonstration.
City officials say the restaurant would undergo thorough cleaning and address structural issues as part of an effort to correct violations.
