A 29-year-old dental nurse, Ruth Kavanagh, ran a red light at a pedestrian crossing and knocked down a secondary school student who was walking to school. The injured pupil was a Leaving Cert student crossing the road at the time. Kavanagh had just dropped her child at a nearby creche and was driving her usual route to work when the collision occurred. The incident resulted in a suspended sentence being imposed on Kavanagh for the traffic offense.
