More than 5,600 people were reported killed in Haiti last year, with UN citing a 20% increase in killings compared to 2023, highlighting rampant gang violence.
Volker Turk emphasized that while the statistics depict a grim reality, they 'cannot capture the absolute horrors being perpetrated in Haiti,' underscoring the pervasive violence.
The UN reported a significant massacre in December where over 200 people were killed in a gang-controlled slum, marking one of the biggest massacres in recent history.
Turk called for increased support for the UN-backed mission in Haiti, stressing that 'impunity for human rights violations and abuses,' and corruption, remain widespread.
