Cupertino City Council has approved a $4.4 million solar panel installation project for three local government buildings despite a split vote due to funding concerns. The project, aimed at reducing the city's reliance on fossil fuels, is anticipated to save approximately $291,000 annually and $13.4 million over its lifespan. The installation must be completed by 2026 to meet utility rate requirements. The project aligns with Cupertino's Climate Action Plan but faces uncertainties due to potential cuts in federal funding for clean energy initiatives.
"We're all trying to get away from fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions, and this is the first step," Mohan told San José Spotlight.
"We went ahead with this because we're worried about losing funding, but we're going to end up paying more," he told San José Spotlight.
