Croydon mum reunites with paramedics who saved her life
Briefly

Polly Abrey from Croydon faced a life-threatening aorta tear in November 2023. After her husband called 999, paramedics quickly arrived to stabilize her, suspecting sepsis due to her critical condition. She underwent surgeries and spent nearly three weeks in a coma at St Bartholomew's Hospital. Having lost mobility during her recovery, the emotional reunion with her rescuers underscored gratitude for emergency responders. Polly expressed appreciation for the paramedics' reassurance during her ordeal, while her husband, Stuart, acknowledged the often-overlooked efforts of paramedics.
"They were the lowest I've ever seen on a person that’s still alive," said Helena Bolton, the paramedic with 23 years of experience, reflecting on Polly's critical condition.
"At the hospital, someone came out and explained that it did not look good and said 'we're probably going to lose her'. That's when I fainted," recalled Stuart, Polly's husband.
"I don't remember huge amounts from my time in hospital but I do have strong memories and flashes from the day it all happened. I remember how reassuring the paramedics were and I'm so grateful for that," Polly expressed.
"I know from my own job that often the work paramedics do can go unrecognised," stated Stuart, highlighting the importance of acknowledging the efforts of emergency responders.
