Crackdown planned on the flytipping gangs dumping toxic waste
Briefly

Paul Brace, interim director for communities and health at Brentwood Council, stated: 'We are making great strides forward in actually getting to the bottom of who is causing this blight to some parts of the borough.' He emphasized the need for collaborative efforts among local councils and police to tackle the increasing flytipping incidents effectively, particularly those orchestrated by organized crime.
Between 2012 and 2020, flytipping incidents fluctuated between just more than 400 and just less than 800 a year. However, from 2021, the numbers have sharply increased, doubling in just the last two years to more than 1,400 incidents per year in Brentwood, indicating a significant escalation of the problem.
Brentwood Council has spent over £140,000 a year on flytipping collection, indicating the significant burden that these incidents place on local resources. The council is not only dealing with more cases but also facing challenges posed by toxic waste, which requires specialized cleanup operations.
The council noted an unprecedented number of large-scale flytips, particularly involving large fuel tanks containing up to 1,000 litres of waste oil. These incidents not only pose environmental risks but also highlight the organized nature of criminal activities linked to flytipping in the borough.
