Counties facing snow and ice alerts revealed as motorists warned of treacherous driving conditions
"Gardaí and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) have pleaded with motorists to drive with care amid fears the treacherous travelling conditions could cause traffic chaos as thousands return to work and school after the Christmas and New Year holidays. The areas most at risk are ­northern counties and on higher ground, Overnight temperatures will potentially fall to -6C early today, resulting in very challenging driving conditions and potentially dangerous road surfaces."
"A Status Yellow snow and ice warning will remain in place for Connacht, Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan and Louth until 11am today. A Status Yellow low temperature and ice warning will be in place for Munster, Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, ­Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow also until 11am. The UK Met Office has also issued a yellow alert for snow and ice for Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry which will be in force until 12 noon today."
Temperatures are expected to fall as low as -6C early today, producing frost, ice, snow and potentially dangerous road surfaces. Status Yellow warnings for snow, ice and low temperatures are in force across many counties in the Republic and a UK Met Office yellow alert covers six Northern Ireland counties until midday. Local authorities have been salting and gritting roads nationwide. GardaĆ­ and the Road Safety Authority have pleaded with motorists to drive with extreme care amid fears of traffic chaos as people return to work and school. Individual school boards will decide any delayed reopening while transport chiefs assess local road conditions. Two people have died in separate road accidents this year amid icy conditions.
