Council to borrow hundreds of millions to pay for 2,000 new homes
Briefly

The redevelopment of the Joyce Avenue and Snells Park estates in Angel Edmonton is slated to provide 2,028 homes, with plans approved last summer for buildings reaching 26 stories. Half of the new units will be affordable, raising the count of social homes by 191. The council aims to complete the project in 15 years, commencing work imminently, and funding from the government’s Affordable Homes Programme will enable the majority of homes in the initial phases to be below market rates. The cost of the redevelopment is estimated at nearly 800 million, with significant borrowing for early phases.
With the scheme's total cost nearly 800 million and approximately 380 million of borrowing set for the first four phases, Cllr Guzel acknowledged the economic backdrop and an uncontrollable market sector made regeneration projects difficult. She stated, 'This isn't just about building homes, it's about building communities, and we've got to start somewhere.'
The homes will be delivered across 11 phases, with the first four being delivered by the council with 481 of 575 homes to be affordable due to 92.2 million funding from the government's Affordable Homes Programme.
Plans for 2,028 homes in blocks up to 26 storeys tall, with half the units earmarked as affordable and a net increase of 191 social homes won approval last summer.
The council now says it wants to complete the redevelopment within 15 years rather than 20, and is set to start work as soon as this month.
