Cosy boys' club': anger over low proportion of women in Irish cabinet
Briefly

The recent formation of the Irish cabinet under Taoiseach Micheal Martin has seen a drop in female representation, now down to three women alongside a total of 15 cabinet members. This change has reignited concerns regarding Ireland's gender equality in politics, with critics like Jennifer Whitmore emphasizing the government's failure to promote talented women, which has led to an environment resembling a 'cosy boys' club'. The current gender representation stands at 25% for women, significantly lower than the Western European average of 37%. Sinn Fein has also raised concerns about the lack of regional representation.
Instead of working to address [the gender imbalance] by promoting talented women from within their own ranks, the government parties have reverted to type creating a cosy boys' club.
I am flabbergasted that the new taoiseach has consigned women to play a secondary role in government.
The cabinet has the worst gender diversity in Western Europe, with only three women now in a 15-member cabinet.
Fianna Fail and Fine Gael pay lip service to increasing women's representation in politics. They just don't believe in promoting them when they get elected.
