"It's always been a bit of a backup plan but we've never had to do it. We try to get them as fresh as we can, really," said James Packer, chair of the World Conker Championships. With the changing weather patterns, storms are now causing conkers to fall early, leading organizers to adapt.
"Frozen conkers do tend to play quite well. But we have to make sure they're thawed out beforehand. We certainly wouldn't play with any that are still frozen," said Packer, highlighting the adjustments made to ensure competitions go smoothly despite weather challenges.
"If she drops her conkers early, it shouldn't mean you can't play," Yanny Mac remarked about the unpredictable nature of conker harvesting, emphasizing the spirit of competition even when faced with weather disruptions.
"Those high winds we had six weeks ago meant the conkers fell off the trees a little bit earlier," Yanny Mac explained, illustrating how climate conditions can affect the availability of conkers for tournaments.
