"I voted yes to repeal the 8th amendment. I wrote columns in this paper about why we should. I argued passionately with members of the Iona Institute on social media about it way back when, and I cried once on live radio talking about the plight of women who had to travel in appalling circumstances because they'd no access to their reproductive rights here."
"George Hook was the interviewer and he cried too listening to me. I can on occasion be very emotive. I remember he said: "Are you saying we need abortion on compassionate grounds?" sounding stunned. The fact that he'd never heard that perspective at that time says a lot about the Ireland we once were - and not that long ago either."
I voted yes to repeal the 8th amendment and wrote columns explaining that position. I argued with members of the Iona Institute on social media and cried on live radio about women forced to travel in appalling circumstances because they lacked access to reproductive rights here. George Hook, the interviewer, cried while listening and asked, 'Are you saying we need abortion on compassionate grounds?' That such a perspective was unfamiliar then indicates how much Ireland has changed. I identify as an unapologetic feminist and nevertheless believe Maria Steen should be on the presidential ballot despite personal disagreement with her views.
