Former CIA operative John Kiriakou revealed that the CIA actively seeks individuals with sociopathic tendencies as they excel in espionage roles. While these recruits may lack full-blown sociopathy and possess some degree of conscience, they are comfortable operating within moral gray areas, making them desirable for intelligence work. Kiriakou suggested that their detachment allows them to easily pass polygraphs and engage in morally ambiguous actions. His own experiences in the agency, particularly in counterterrorism, exemplify these traits without engaging in unethical interrogation techniques.
'Sociopaths are impossible to control...they slip through the cracks because they have no conscience and they pass the polygraph very easily.'
'People who have sociopathic tendencies do have a conscience but are still perfectly happy to work in moral, legal and ethical gray areas.'
