The Dáil faced unprecedented turmoil over speaker allocations, sparked by Independent TDs receiving temporary speaking rights. Opposition parties clashed with the Ceann Comhairle, demanding clarity on legal advice regarding the situation. Tensions escalated, resulting in multiple suspensions of the Dáil as protests from non-government parties escalated. Micheál Martin expressed his fury over the inability to elect a government, highlighting a failure of constitutional duties. Aontú's departure from the technical group added further complexity to the political landscape, marking a critical moment in Irish governance.
When the Dáil convened at 11am this morning, the opposition parties called on the Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy to specify when she would make a final ruling on the issue.
“This is the first time, I think, in over 100 years, that the Dáil has failed to elect a government to fulfill its constitutional obligation,” a furious Micheál Martin told the media scrum outside government building this evening.
The house was suspended for the third time, amid shouting and calls for clarity.
Sinn Féin's Matt Carthy told Ms Murphy that this was “a test of you, Ceann Comhairle, and you are failing.”
