Rocco Design Architects Associates completed a new annex for the CUHK Art Museum, expanding its spatial and cultural reach through a design rooted in contextual sensitivity. The annex connects directly to the existing museum and supports CUHK's mission to promote Chinese art and culture. The design, based on the theme 'Upon Heritage Stems New Marvels,' features a cantilevered mass extending 12 meters above the terrain. Inspired by traditional Chinese painting, the structure allows for improved circulation and maintains the integrity of the surrounding landscape, enhancing visitor experience within the museum complex.
The annex establishes a direct connection to the existing museum, aligning with CUHK's institutional mission to promote Chinese art and cultural education.
The design concept, based on the theme 'Upon Heritage Stems New Marvels,' is reflected in both architectural form and spatial organization.
The massing of the annex is informed by landscape imagery found in traditional Chinese painting, particularly the works 'Shanshui in Four Screens' and 'Echoing with Distant Horses'.
The raised main exhibition hall enables clear circulation and improved spatial flow across the museum complex.
