Canada Pledges $15 Million for Climate Adaptation in Hindu Kush Himalayan Region
Briefly

Canada committed CA$15 million to climate adaptation projects in Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh, working with ICIMOD to reduce vulnerability to climate change. The initiative consists of three parts: addressing water scarcity, enhancing the resiliency of women and Indigenous communities, and scaling similar projects globally. The Hindu Kush Himalayan region faces high food insecurity, affecting many mountain residents. The project aims to promote inclusive, resilient development, focusing specifically on empowering women and Indigenous Peoples impacted by climate challenges.
Canada's CA$15 million pledge will facilitate the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development's goals, particularly for the region's most vulnerable populations: women and Indigenous Peoples.
Water access is the first issue the project plans to address in both the long- and short-term. As glaciers continue to melt, water availability is expected to peak around 2050.
