Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele dismissed independent journalists as 'imbeciles' after they reported on his family's acquisitions of $9 million in properties during his presidency.
Bukele accused the journalists of being 'paid by Soros' and claimed their investigations were unfounded, stating, 'None of their investigations can withstand the scrutiny of an accountant.'
The President's brother acquired a $1.3 million property shortly after a tax exemption law benefitting investors in the historic center was passed by the Bukele-controlled Assembly.
Thousands of street vendors were evicted from the renovated historic center of San Salvador under the pretense of attracting tourism, raising concerns over police threats and state power.
