"Brooklyn's history of slavery shapes the borough we live in today: its contours, its street names, its economy and culture," said Dominique Jean-Louis, chief historian.
The exhibit offers archival documents, rare personal accounts from enslaved Brooklynites, and artwork to visualize the period, emphasizing the generational legacies of inequality.
Artist Rusty Zimmerman created a portrait of Mildred Jones, showcasing her ancestral connection to Samuel Anderson, reflecting the importance of visual history in personal narratives.
