The UK leads globally in the rate of arrests against environmental protesters, with 17% of protests resulting in arrests compared to a global average of just 6.7%.
Michel Forst stated, 'In many countries, the state response to peaceful environmental protest is increasingly to repress rather than to enable and protect those seeking to speak up for the environment.'
Oscar Berglund noted, 'These kinds of protests have increased, climate protests quite sharply, and the response to this has been a crackdown that has to be seen in the wider political sense of a breakdown in climate action.'
The research shows a troubling trend of states focusing on punishing dissent, even as the frequency and intensity of climate activism surges across the globe.
