Body of Kieran Quilligan found on Cork scrubland had injuries from hammer-like weapon, murder trial hears
"In opening the case, Mr O'Sullivan said the jury would effectively be dealing with two trials as the State will argue the two defendants were involved in a joint enterprise or common design. Mr O'Sullivan outlined the prosecution case but stressed that what he was saying was not evidence but merely what the State would argue. He said Mr Quilligan was a drug user and had availed of the services of Cork Simon."
"Mr O'Sullivan said the prosecution will argue that on the morning of September 1 2023, Mr Quilligan and another man, John Paul 'Bubbles' Thornton, went to a lane off York Street in Cork city centre. "They had an incident with Niall Long on the side street...they robbed him and assaulted him." Mr Quilligan then returned to his apartment. Mr O'Sullivan said that Mr Long was caught on CCTV security cameras moving around Cork city centre, going close to where Mr Quilligan lived."
Niall Long (33) and Luke Taylor (27) pleaded not guilty to the murder of Kieran Quilligan (47). The charge alleges the murder occurred between September 1, 2023 and January 29, 2024 at an unknown location within the State. Mr Quilligan's skeletal remains were found in a one-tonne gravel bag in scrubland off the Midleton-Rostellan road in east Cork in January 2024. The case is before the Central Criminal Court in Cork, with Ms Justice Siobhan Lankford presiding and a jury of ten men and two women. The prosecution will argue a joint enterprise between the defendants and expects a three-to-four week trial. The prosecution alleges an earlier September incident in Cork city involving Mr Quilligan, John Paul 'Bubbles' Thornton and Niall Long, and cites CCTV placing Mr Long near the victim's residence.
