During an interfaith service at Washington National Cathedral, Episcopal Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde addressed President Trump, urging him to show mercy towards marginalized groups, including LGBTQ+ youth and immigrant families fearing deportation. Budde emphasized the importance of unity in the diverse and polarized nation, underlining values such as the dignity of every person, honesty, humility, and most importantly, compassion. Her appeal highlighted the critical need for empathy in an era marked by significant societal division.
In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in families who fear for their lives.
I ask you to have mercy, Mr. President, on those in our communities whose children fear that their parents will be taken away.
Respecting the dignity of every human being and honesty, humility, and especially mercy - we need compassion and empathy to unite our diverse country.
I realized... in a country rich with diversity, we need mercy. We need compassion. We need empathy.
