Carolina Wilga, a 26-year-old German backpacker, was found 11 nights after getting lost in the Australian Outback. She lost control of her car and abandoned it after rolling down a slope, subsequently walking barefoot in rugged terrain. Wilga survived by drinking rainwater and puddles. Her family last heard from her on June 29, and she was rescued on July 11 by farmer Tania Henley, 30 kilometers from where her car was discovered. Wilga expressed gratitude for her rescuer, describing the experience as harrowing.
"Some people might wonder why I even left my car, even though I had water, food, and clothing there. The answer is: I lost control of the car and rolled down a slope. In the crash, I hit my head significantly. As a result of the accident, I left my car in a state of confusion and got lost."
"Wilga had walked barefoot across a huge distance in the remote reserve after abandoning her van many miles away from any established track, with Wilga writing in her statement that she lost control of the car."
"I am incredibly grateful to Tania Henley for finding me. She is my rescuer and angel. I am recovering in Perth after this ordeal, which was truly harrowing."
