Patricky Freire has announced his departure from the Professional Fighters League (PFL) and has officially signed with the emerging Global Fight League (GFL). The GFL plans to launch a team-based format for MMA starting in April, with a fighter draft coming up soon. Freire, a well-regarded competitor noted for his successful past with Bellator MMA where he was a lightweight champion, shared his gratitude for his experiences in both Bellator and PFL. Meanwhile, his brother Patricio Freire's future within MMA remains uncertain following his own release from the PFL.
I'll never forget all the amazing moments I had with the organization. And a couple of fun fights [with] the PFL. I'm excited for what will be coming next.
The GFL is expected to launch a team-based MMA format beginning in April. The draft to select the fighters to represent each team is scheduled for Friday at 8 p.m. ET.
Patricky Freire announced his release from the PFL, and a day later, his signing with the fledging Global Fight League became official.
In recent weeks a number of notable former champions and veterans have been linked to the organization.
