BBC scientist confirms tarantulas inhabit parts of UK during spider season
Briefly

The purseweb spider, Britain’s only tarantula, is a stay-at-home species that primarily lives inside a silk tube resembling an old purse, which can be up to 25cm long. This unique structure limits their visibility but is essential for their survival, allowing them to remain hidden from predators while waiting for prey to pass by.
Purseweb spiders possess venom to subdue their prey and can bite humans if mishandled. However, bites are generally not dangerous, except in rare cases involving individuals highly sensitive to spider venom. This knowledge is crucial, especially during spider season, where increased visibility might cause unnecessary fear.
