Fremont, known as Little Kabul, hosts a large Afghan community, many of whom are humanitarian parolees feeling anxious about their status in the U.S. Following America's withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, over 100,000 Afghans were resettled as humanitarian parolees with promises of eventual citizenship. Advocates stress that important discussions about immigration often overlook the plight of Afghan allies who assisted U.S. operations for decades. The Biden administration has introduced new visa programs aimed at aiding Afghan refugees, acknowledging their contributions and the urgency of their needs.

Lost in the discussion of DACA, Dreamers and the US-Mexico border, are the millions of Afghans who risked their lives to help the U.S. military for more than 20 years following its 2001 invasion.
We (have) thousands of folks in the Bay Area who have arrived here under humanitarian parole.
The Biden administration created two new visa programs for refugees, expanding the number of Afghans who could apply to resettle in the U.S.
