Barking Riverside switches on its Cold-War replacement substation
Briefly

The new 132kV indoor substation is specifically designed to connect the local grid operator UK Power Networks to National Grid's high voltage transmission network, effectively providing electricity for around 20,000 homes in the area.
Replacing a Cold War-era substation that had reached the end of its lifespan, the new facility occupies significantly less space, enhancing efficiency and accommodating future upgrades.
This modern facility not only serves the Barking area but also contributes to broader energy distribution, being connected to nearby Thames tunnel and Network Rail feeder stations.
With 17 bays that allow for robust connections to the grid, this new infrastructure aims to bolster electricity supply resilience in East London as energy demands continue to rise.
