Bangladesh's Foreign Ministry formally requested that India extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who faces serious charges, including crimes against humanity, after fleeing to India.
Touhid Hossain, acting head of Bangladesh's Foreign Ministry, stated, 'a note verbale has been sent to the Indian government saying that the Bangladesh government wants her back here for judicial process'. The call for extradition comes after she fled amid violent protests and serious accusations of abuses.
Indian officials confirmed receipt of the Bangladesh extradition request, stating, 'We confirm that we have received a note verbale from the Bangladesh High Commission today in connection with an extradition request.'
Muhammad Yunus, the Bangladeshi interim administration leader, emphasized the urgency of the situation by noting that he would demand Hasina's extradition in order to face trial for her alleged role in serious human rights violations.
