Baku Court Upholds 9-Year Prison Sentence Against Radio Free Europe Journalist Mehralizadeh
"We strongly condemn the court's decision to uphold Farid's unjust and baseless sentence,"
"Today should have marked Farid's return to his wife and baby. Instead, he remains behind bars, denied the justice he deserves."
"You talk too much."
"conspiring to smuggle foreign currency"
A Baku Court of Serious Crimes rejected appeals and upheld the nine-year sentence for journalist and economist Farid Mehralizada and sentences for six other journalists. Mehralizada was detained on May 30, 2024, reportedly seized by security agents who put a hood over his head and said, "You talk too much." Authorities placed him in pretrial detention on charges of "conspiring to smuggle foreign currency" linked to a case against Abzas Media. Abzas Media stated Mehralizada had no direct involvement and was an expert whose comments appeared on its website. Colleagues received sentences ranging from seven-and-a-half to nine years. Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty leadership condemned the decision and characterized the sentence as unjust.
