The 80th anniversary of Auschwitz's liberation was commemorated with survivors and officials, amidst concerns that it may be the final gathering of many remaining survivors. Tova Friedman, an 86-year-old Auschwitz survivor, emphasized the alarming rise of hatred and distrust in today's society, warning of potential future atrocities if left unchecked. The event saw Polish President Andrzej Duda remembering the immense loss of Polish life during the Holocaust, with calls to ensure that such horrors are never repeated in history.
The world has become toxic. I realize that we're in a crisis again, that there is so much hatred around, so much distrust, that if we don't stop, it may get worse and worse.
We Poles, on whose land - occupied by Nazi Germans at that time - the Holocaust unfolded, bear a special responsibility to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.
