"This free-trade agreement would be liberating for the German economy. It's almost impossible to imagine a more difficult situation geopolitically, we have to use this opportunity," said Volker Treier, the foreign policy leader of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He emphasized that after 25 years of negotiations, the moment to finalize the EU-Mercosur agreement is now, stating, "If not now, when?"
Treier highlighted that the EU-Mercosur deal would be a critical response to the dismal business survey results in Europe, primarily driven by the threat of US protectionism under the incoming Trump administration. He explained the deal's potential benefits, stating, "With the help of South American raw materials, Europe could achieve its green transformation more quickly and sustainably."
The agreement is positioned as a way to reduce costs for European businesses, who currently face massive tariffs to export goods to Mercosur countries. Treier pointed out that European businesses are paying around 4 billion euros in tariffs, saying, "In part, that is because Mercosur countries are imposing 25-30% tariffs on classic German export products like cars, but also electronics or machined goods."
