The emergence of an autonomous region run by the Kurds in northern Syria was unexpected, as Syrian Kurds, comprising about 10% of the population, had been suppressed. Yet, this quiet presence became a significant political and military movement remarkably soon after the conflict started in 2012.
The PYD's position is precarious after the HTS takeover, especially with Turkey focused on limiting Kurdish autonomy and the HTS-led regime unlikely to tolerate existing Kurdish governance.
