In a vibrant showcase on Dec. 7 at the Loisaida Center in the East Village, Artisferio brought together 17 artists across disciplinespainters, dancers, poets, filmmakers, and musiciansin an unprecedented celebration of Latin American creativity.
According to a recent report by the National Endowment for the Arts, less than 8% of U.S. arts funding goes to projects led by or serving Latino communities.
I dreamed of a space for poets, singers, actors and painters, a place to connect, Figueroa said. I knew so many people, especially Latinos, who didn't have a space to showcase their art and what they could create.
We need more spaces like this in New York, said Krystell Santiago, a Puerto Rican and Dominican singer and senior at Columbia University. Artisferio brings together the creativity of Latinos in a way that's both powerful and inspiring.
