Admiral Sir Tony Radakin emphasized that the UK must face threats with a clear eyes, acknowledging only a remote chance of a significant attack from Russia. He stated that Moscow understands the severe consequences of such aggression, which reinforces the importance of maintaining a strong nuclear deterrent.
In discussing the current global landscape, Sir Tony described we are at the start of a 'third nuclear age,' marked by complex challenges such as proliferating technologies and weakened security structures that define international relations today. He compared this age to the previous two: the Cold War and the era focused on disarmament.
The Chief of Defence Staff pointed out that the British Army’s capacity would be overwhelmed within 6 to 12 months if engaged in combat at the scale of the conflict in Ukraine, highlighting concerning vulnerabilities in the current defense framework amid rising global tensions.
Sir Tony also warned of increasing threats, pointing to Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran, stating that their military developments and erratic behaviors introduce multiple and serious threats. He noted the importance of the UK’s nuclear capabilities to counteract and deter such movements.
