According to the Farmer's Almanac, the winter solstice marks the official beginning of astronomical winter, differing from meteorological winter which begins weeks earlier.
The winter solstice, occurring on December 21st or 22nd, is the shortest day of the year, marking the moment when the Northern Hemisphere is tilted farthest from the Sun.
Only lasting a brief moment, the winter solstice signifies the darkest day of the year, but also the turning point towards longer days of light.
