Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) acknowledged Connolly's seniority played a role in his victory, stating, "Everyone sort of made the case that they would be the best to help change the message across the country. ... He's a very good communicator."
A House Democrat aligned with Ocasio-Cortez remarked that steering is comprised of the most senior members, indicating it wasn't Ocasio-Cortez's most receptive venue.
Lawmakers noted there's still a chance for the caucus to reject steering's recommendation, with Beyer stating that the vote was "really just advisory ... we're not the final decider."
Referencing previous years, it was noted that the full caucus rejected steering's recommendation in 2014, when they chose Rep. Frank Pallone (D-N.J.) over Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.).
