Amazon will pay $4 million to settle driver tip theft lawsuit
Briefly

Amazon has settled with the District of Columbia for $3.95 million to resolve allegations of tip theft from its Flex delivery drivers. The lawsuit, initiated in December 2022, accused Amazon of diverting nearly one-third of driver tips between 2016 and 2019 to offset base wages, a change not disclosed to drivers. The settlement mandates Amazon to disclose any future tip usage changes while imposing penalties. Although Amazon denies wrongdoing, this action emphasizes the need for accountability among employers regarding worker compensation practices.
When companies mislead customers to boost their profits by stealing tips intended for their workers, they are cheating their consumers, their employees, and their competitors who play by the rules.
It's not sufficient, after being caught, to simply give back the ill-gotten gains. Rather, there must be meaningful consequences to deter misconduct from happening in the first place.
