Alois Brunner, the notorious SS officer responsible for deporting 128,000 Jews during the Holocaust, fled to Syria where he purportedly trained the country’s security forces in torture tactics.

Under the guidance of Brunner, Hafez al-Assad's intelligence service adopted cruel torture methodologies that had long-lasting impacts on human rights within Syria, persisting for decades after Brunner's death.
