The regional executive officer Tony Canavan announced an external review of maternity services at Portiuncula Hospital after unusually high incidents of infant care problems, including seven cases of reduced oxygen supply and two stillbirths. A new and experienced medical team has been appointed to address these issues. Last year, for approximately 1,300 births, six cases needed referral for head cooling, substantially exceeding expected rates. Canavan noted that all families affected have been contacted and are being kept informed as individual case reviews continue.
The incidents at Portiuncula Hospital included an unusual number of cases where infants suffered reduced oxygen supply to the brain, prompting a comprehensive review of maternity services.
The appointment of a highly experienced management team aims to address the high rate of incidents, which far exceeded expectations based on historical data.
