Researchers have successfully used advanced 3D X-ray imaging techniques to digitally unroll an ancient scroll, charred in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. This scroll, part of hundreds found in Herculaneum's library, has yielded more readable text than any other scanned example from this collection. The collaboration, spurred by the Vesuvius Challenge, has made significant progress in accessing the scrolls that were previously thought to be unreadable. Scholars have identified Greek words within the text, marking a historic breakthrough in the study of these ancient documents.
This scroll contains more recoverable text than we have ever seen in a scanned Herculaneum scroll.
The document was virtually unrolled on a computer, revealing multiple columns of text which scholars at Oxford have now begun to read.
