"It is evident that the traditional tools—peacekeeping, early warning, conflict mediation—are not working," says Jakkie Cilliers, highlighting the ineffectiveness of conventional conflict resolution methods in Africa.
"Peace is the product of local, national and regional dynamics, but it seems increasingly challenging to streamline these many diverging interests," according to political observers observing the current conflicts on the continent.
The war in Sudan, which erupted in April 2023, has devastated communities, displaced millions and exacerbated an already dire humanitarian crisis, marking one of Sudan's most challenging periods.
Governments often focus on territorial integrity, while international actors prefer a humanitarian-based vision, demonstrating conflicting priorities in resolving African conflicts.
