White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended a new federal worker buyout program, asserting it is not meant to remove critics of President Trump but to encourage more federal employees to return to the office. Leavitt emphasized that the program offers financial incentives to those who might choose resignation, following the president's campaign promises. She also highlighted the low in-office attendance among federal workers in Washington, D.C., and noted the necessity for effective use of federal office spaces. The administration views the program as a popular policy outside of D.C.
This is a suggestion to federal workers that they have to return to work. And if they don't, then they have the option to resign. And this administration is very generously offering to pay them for eight months.
6% of the federal workforce in this city actually shows up to work. That's unacceptable. We're all here at work at the office.
