According to the Australian Shark Incident Database, only 255 fatal bites have been recorded since 1791 in the country of 27 million people.
Shark attacks in Australia are rare; however, South Australia has experienced an unusual increase in shark episodes recently, with five attacks in 2023, three of which were fatal.
The beach was known to be frequented by sharks, but Stokes did not specify the species believed to be involved in this incident.
